Pietersburg is centrally located in the Northern Province, 220km north of Pretoria. It is the only proclaimed city in the province which is regarded as the country's poorest. It became capital of the newly created Northern Province in post-apartheid South Africa in 1995. Pietersburg is a high-order regional service centre of long standing The importance of the city in terms of its economic, development and administrative potential is immense. It is estimated that one-quarter of the GNP in the province is accured in Pietersburg.
